My Magic Flying Carpet

During a recent coaching session with my coach, Margie Heiler, the issue of control reared its ugly head again. Because I had an abusive childhood, when I became an adult I created safety for myself by controlling my environment. This includes not only the location, but the people and events in my life as well.

Now, I understand the Universal Truth that I'm here to have certain learning experiences, each of which I've chosen. I also know that in order to learn completely about those lessons, I must experience all facets of them. This means, for example, that in order to learn completely about love, I must learn not only about all the forms of love, I must learn about all the forms of non-love as well.

So, back to the issue of control. In order for me to wholly understand this issue so that I can be complete with the learning, I must experience all the other facets of it. One of these facets is what I define as the exact opposite of control - trust.

Margie and I explored these two states of being - control vs. trust - using a great coaching exercise entitled The Stateline. This exercise offers the opportunity to explore, at many levels of awareness, two opposite states of being. During this exercise I came to awareness of how freeing it is to be in a state of trust. This is very attractive to me, since freedom and independence are two of my most important life values.

I also came to realize that trust requires a whole lot less energy than it takes to hold onto control. Being in a state of trust means I can release the death grip of control, freeing up all that energy to use in moving forward instead of holding on to things as they are now. I can use all that energy to create a new, grander environment.

Releasing control means having the freedom to experience new options for living an expanded life. It also means allowing the Universe to give me better, bigger, and more than what I was allowing to come in with my measly control.

At the end of the session, I began to get a sense that I was standing with my arms spread out and back, much like little kids do when they're running around pretending to fly. I felt the wind on my face and felt my hair being blown backwards. With my inner vision I looked down and saw that I was standing on a magic carpet, soaring gracefully over the earth to a new, beautiful, exciting destination. This magic carpet became my visual symbol for trust.

Yesterday, as I was moseying around my favorite spiritual bookstore, I discovered a mousepad made from a small Oriental rug - complete with fringe. My Magic Carpet! It's small and powerful... and it's name is Trust.
