When the Going Gets Tough, the Tough Go On Retreat
Richard Brownkatz

Ghandi said that when he had twice as much to do, he meditated twice as long.

That may sound odd to the western mind. It certainly does to mine, which when faced with twice as much to do starts insisting I get up twice as early, drink twice as much coffee, skip my prayers, meditation and breakfast and zoom off in a frenzy to get everything done before I run out of time, as if that was possible.

But long before I run out of time, I run out of energy, creativity, compassion and patience.

Ghandi was not alone. Here's what other spiritual masters did when faced with extraordinary demands:

Moses went on top of Mt. Sinai for over a month.
The Bal Shem Tov went into the woods.
Jesus went to the desert for 40 days.
Mohammed went to a cave.
Siddartha went to a tree.
Luke Skywalker went to live in a swamp with Master Yoda.

Wait a minute. Luke Skywalker? Sure. Steven Spielberg's "Star Wars" was heavily influenced by Mythologist Joseph Campbell and his work on the universal hero myth. Campbell demonstrated that every human culture, religion, and spiritual tradition has had a similar myth in which a hero is "called" by the universe to some special task, withdraws from regular society, has a remarkable experience in which he or she gains something really good, and then returns to society to share that good with others.

Each has something like a vision, like those sought by Native Americans in a Vision Quest. Moses meets God and returns with the Ten Commandments, the Bal Shem Tov with Jewish mysticism, Jesus with the Sermon on The Mount, Mohammed with the Quaran, Siddartha with Buddhism and Skywalker with the compassion to help bring his father back from the Dark Side.

Almost always the hero returns with compassion.

The Matrix. Neo is called by the universe through Morpheus and The Oracle, goes to school on the Nebbuchanezzar, returns with the ability to save both Zion and the machine world. But in one scene, he returns to rest at Zion, to spend time with his new love, but surrenders his rest and recreation to a crowd who, his wise girlfriend says, "need you."

Myth is not entertainment, nor is it escape. These are teaching stories. Consider the practicalities.

Ghandi said spirituality is not for escape from humanity but to serve it. Out of his meditative retreats came India's freedom from Britain. Mother Theresas's retreats into prayer and meditation built an order that cares for the poorest and sickest. And she insisted she led the happiest of lives.

So here's my point: if you think a retreat is about escaping from the world, don't go on one. It is about withdrawal in order to return. It is about going to a sort of school in which you have the chance to learn something about your Self, gain something of great value from your Self, for your Self and, thereby, for us.

And there are endless possibilities for retreat. There's a Catholic Church down the street from me with a small, cool, candle-lit chapel I retreat to for an hour or so. There are formal retreats in groups. There are directed retreats and retreats alone. You can retreat for weeks and months, a weekend, a half an hour.

So go. Be a hero.
