A Wharfus Perspective on Leaders A good many years ago I had a friend named Wharfus. That wasn't his real name, of course. His real name was either Bob or Chris. Or both. No one ever knew for certain. He had done many colorful and exciting things in his life, many of which I'm sure he never talked about. Those that he did tell of were great adventures to those of us who lived normal, boring lives. He'd worked in New York as a fashion model, lived in Cuba, and was an actor in Hollywood. When I knew him, he was in his reclining years and loved to tell stories about his past adventures over a few beers at the local tavern. We grew to be good friends, Wharfus and I. Occasionally I'd confide my troubles to him - usually about matters of the heart - and he'd listen gently. When I was done, he'd look at me quietly for a bit and then share the wisdom that came from his years of experience in the world. "Well. You can look at it this way," he'd say and he'd just stare at me for a few moments. "Or, you can look at it this way," and he'd tip his head so he was looking at me sideways. Even though he partially meant it as a joke, he was offering profound words of wisdom. He was reminding me to look at the situation from different perspectives. Wharfus was practising one of the most important and valuable things Life Coaches do - helping their clients to see their issues from different perspectives. Only by doing so can they see new choices. This simple maneuver takes the client out of victim position ("I have no choice, I have to do this.") and puts them into a position of empowerment ("I have the power of choice and I choose this option.") Consider for a moment the belief that our elected officials are our leaders. If there is a leader, then by definition those who aren't leaders are followers. Followers do only as their leader tells them. As followers, they have no choice. Now look at this issue the Wharfus Way. Our elected officials are paid their wages with our taxes. This changes their definition from leaders into our employees, working for the wages we pay them. Choosing to look at this from the Wharfus perspective, how would you like your political employees, from the President down to your local city Mayor, to earn the wages you pay them?
