The Secret of Being Heard Ever tried to tell a teenager anything? If you did, you probably noticed right away that your message was bouncing off them like a hard rain on a newly waxed car. Getting a message through to teens is an extreme test of the effectiveness of your communication skills. If they tune you out, no doubt there are others who are doing the same thing - customers, clients, co-workers, bosses, friends, and relatives. Don't keep beating on a closed door - or mind - trying to get it open. All you'll do is end up exhausting yourself. There's a simple yet monumentally effective technique to open the door so your message can be heard. Ask permission. Try this little test to see how it works: Read each of these ficitious headlines, pausing after each one to sense your reaction.
Which of them is more attractive to you and makes you want to hear more of the message? Which sets up a feeling of resistance within you? The technique of shouting the loudest or continually beating on a closed door in order to get someone's attention only results in them turning to you in annoyance. Or worse, determined resistance. You may get their attention for a few moments, but when you do, they won't be open and willing to hear your message. Remember the saying, "If you want to be heard, whisper"? Asking permission to tell your story, share your message, or give your sales pitch is the equivalent of whispering.
