Stakeholders
The
members of a writing group I belong to, The Sisterhood of the Traveling
Pens, have decided to work through the life-changing book, The
Artist's Way by Julia Cameron. One of the things
that she believes is vitally important to recovering your creative
self is getting the right kinds of support and protecting yourself
from non-support.
I
am a strong proponent of choosing the members of your support system.
And of defining the types of support they'll give you. My book,
An Inner Journey,
has two (2) chapters devoted to identifying the types of support
you want and the people who will give it to you.
Why
is this so important?
Imagine
that you're about to embark on a trip to an exotic locale... one
you've been dreaming about for years. You've watched programs about
it on TV, have a thick file of brochures and articles, and subscribe
to a travel magazine devoted to the place. Finally, you're going.
You have your ticket and passport. You've been packing, unpacking,
and repacking your bags for weeks. Excitedly, you call a dear friend
and tell them about your plan, expecting them to jump up and down
in joy for you.
Instead
you get a list of all the disasters and bad experiences that ever
happened where you're going on your dream vacation and a dire warning
to change your plans for some place nearer home and safer.
After
listening to your friend's frightening and depressing stories, the
joy and excitement you were feeling for your trip has dwindled.
Now you're feeling fear and dread starting to creep in around the
edges.
The
truth is your friend is a stakeholder in your trip. She's fearful
for your safety and is concerned that is something dire might happen
to you she could lose you... her friend.
The
trip is a metaphor for any new journey you wish to take in your
life. It could be...
- quitting
your job and starting your own business
- moving
to a new area of the country... or the world
- taking
steps to finally begin living your dream of painting or writing
a book or sculpting
It's
not just advisable that you know who you can depend on to support
you and who are the non-supporters. It's mandatory. The truth
about who your supporters are may surprise you.
Years
ago I witnessed a very sad incident in which a friend told her dream
of being a seminar leader to her sister, with whom she had a loving
relationship. The sister destroyed her dream within a few minutes
by informing her of her responsibilities. How dare she do anything
so frivolous as create the life of her dreams when she had a husband
to support?
In
this case, the sister was a stakeholder because she was fearful
that she might end up having to support both my friend and her husband
in the event that the seminar-leading career tanked.
Don't
let that happen to you. If you have a dream and are ready to begin
making it a reality, first get clear about your stakeholders. Family,
friends, coworkers, bosses, and others may all have a stake in the
life choices you make. If you want to succeed, you must first determine
who they are and then get clarity on the type of support or even
non-support they'll give you.
Begin
by creating a list of everyone who may have a vested interest in
your plan. Leave space after each name to answer these questions:
- Will
this person be supportive or non-supportive of me as I begin
and continue on this project? (If the person is non-supportive,
DO NOT mention your dream to them.)
- What
type of support do I want from this person? It can be cheerleading,
physical strength, mentoring, a shoulder to cry on, brainstorming,
etc.
- On
a scale of 1 to 10, with the lower number being less support,
how willing is this person to give me the type of support
I want from them?
Once
you have this list, you'll know exactly who you can go to for the
type of support you want... and you'll most likely receive it.
Love,
Kathy
ps.
The non-supportive people have a very valuable talent. When you're
ready for troubleshooting, they're the ones you want. They'll be
delighted to tell you every thing that could possibly go wrong with
your dream or project. There are even professionals who do this.
They're called "lawyers" and "accountants".
pps.

Soul
Music
My
friend, Becky Waters, is a fabulous musician, composer, life coach,
and spiritual teacher. She has combined all her talents to create
songs for the soul. She calls them Soul Music. Here's what she says
about these magic songs:
"Through
deep listening and playing your personal song as I hear it from
your spirit, I help you to integrate your conscious mind with your
innermost soul. I regard both the process and the product as sacred,
orchestrated by the Divine on your behalf. And it is the fulfillment
of my soul’s purpose to help you hear your own soul’s song."
Some
of the sounds she uses are from the sacred Solfeggio music scale,
which deepen your connection to Spirit. Each note in the scale is
of a specific vibrational rate, having the effect of opening and
energizing the chakra of corresponding vibration.
Listen
to a sample of Soul Music here:

Then
go to her website, www.spiritualcoachingcenter.com
and click on the link to "Soul Music" to find out how
you can have her create your very own soul song.

Dear
Women,
Are
you feeling like your life is on hold indefinitely?
Are
you ready for a lifestyle change?
You're
not alone. Untold thousands of other women are feeling like
you. They, too, are feeling the nudges that something's gotta change
in their life. The dissatisfaction they feel of being stuck in an
ill-fitting career, a dead-end job, or a relationship that no longer
suits them is telling them it's time to make a change... one of
their choosing.
"When
mama ain't happy, ain't nobody happy."
That
old comic saying holds a lot of truth. Women are the caretakers
and nurturers of others. You can't help it. It's programmed into
your DNA and you're programmed by your environment. From
the time you're old enough to have toys as a little girl, you're
given dolls to practice taking care of, preparing you for when you're
an adult.
At
some point in your adulthood, suddenly you realize that no one is
taking care of you. Including yourself.
That's
when the dissatisfaction starts to creep in around the edges of
your life.
Here's
some good news: As long as you're still breathing (which you
are or you wouldn't be reading this now) you can make changes in
your life that support you to live your best life, the life that
fills you with joy and excitement.
The
Life Betterment Club for Women is a group of women who meet once
a week for an hour on the phone. Each meeting is facilitated by
me, Kathy Wilson, Life Purpose Coach, and focuses on a concept or
technique for the betterment of each member's life.
