Abundance of What?!? I'm beginning to believe that words actually make true communication more difficult. That's an odd statement coming from someone who does as much writing as I do. But the truth is that many times in the middle of searching for just the right word to convey my exact meaning to my readers, I wonder if there even is such a thing. We have more words now than ever before in our history, and more words are being added to our vocabulary each day. I ask you, are we doing any better in our communication with others? Given all the discord between people in our world, I'd say not. In addition to the problem of too many words, we have words that change meaning. I don't mean words like combine (which means either to mingle or a type of farm machine) and fawn (which means either to dote on someone or a baby deer). I mean words that change meaning because we change the way we use them. Let's take the word "abundance". Because of the current popularity about manifesting (the Law of Attraction, for example) that word is now used to mean "lots of money". But the true meaning is simply "lots". We've added that last part about money as a kind of shorthand. When someone says, "I'm manifesting abundance" I always want to ask them, "An abundance of what?". My late, great friend Julius Johnston used to talk about how the whales epitomized the concept of abundance. "When they're hungry, they just open their mouths and food swims in," he'd say. That's a wonderful metaphor, but when it comes to manifesting abundance, I'd rather not have an abundance of fish swimming into my mouth. It's more than just important to be absolutely clear about what you're manifesting an abundance of. It's mandatory. Remember, you always get what you ask for. If you simply ask for abundance, you'll get more of what you've already got.. the good and the not so good. Love,
