T.F.I.G (The Freedom in Gift-giving) I was born during a Mercury Retrograde period which has influenced how I view my world. Typically, I think about things differently than most other people. Some might say I have an odd way of looking at things. This attribute makes for some very interesting conversations oft times. Recently I was musing about the tradition of gift-giving for Christmas. Years ago when stores began disrespecting the tradition of waiting until after Thanksgiving to begin hawking their Christmas wares, I decided I'd had enough of the commercializing of a sacred holiday. I made a decision to not give gifts for Christmas. (I can hear your gasps of horror as you read this shocking statement.) I told all the members of my family, my friends, and my co-workers that my gift to them was this: they needn't buy me a gift for Christmas because I wasn't buying them one. My gift was the relief they felt at not having to stress out over what to get me and how much money to spend on it and if I would even like it. Contrary to what you might think, most of these people were grateful. After the looks of relief crossed their faces, they tried valiently to look shocked, but it was a vain attempt. The truth was, they loved the idea. Some even borrowed the idea and made it theirs by making a few changes. Some drastically reduced the number of people for whom they bought Christmas gifts. Others got creative and gave home-made gifts. Yet others gave gift certificates for such things as back massages, cleaning the house, washing the car... you get the idea.
