The
Power of a Power Outage
During
our recent Pacific Northwest style blizzard (4" of snow and
temperatures in the twenties) I was happily sipping hot tea as I
caught up on some of my reading, tucked under my polar fleece blanket
and all cozy and warm. In an instant, all my cozy warm feelings
disappeared as the wind began to blow hard and the lights in the
house began to flicker.
Suddenly
I was faced with a potential power outage.
Now,
a power outage can be kinda fun, in a primitive, basic survival
kinda way. Think candle light, roaring fire in the fireplace, snuggling
together with loved ones (to conserve body heat, of course). However,
the reality is that if you aren't prepared with all these ingredients
for surviving a power outage, it's anything but fun.
In
my case I'm missing a major ingredient - an alternative heat source.
If
the power had gone out, I would have been huddled over a roaring
fire of six or seven candles. Luckily
for me, the power stayed on and I remained cozy and warm, albeit
a bit nervous.
This
situation got
me thinking about a story I heard years ago about a farmhand who
was trying to get a job with a local dairy farmer. The only answer
he gave to questions put to him by the farmer regarding his ability
to work was "I sleep well." It was during the busy haying
season and the farmer was shorthanded, so he hired the man despite
his strange answer.
The
new hired man proved to be a hard worker and the farmer was pleased
with him, keeping him on after the haying was over.
As
winter approached, storms began to attack, increasing in number
and intensity. During a particularly violent storm, the farmer was
awakened in the middle of the night by the roar of the wind. Concerned
about his animals, he quickly dressed and ran down to the shack
where his hired hand was staying. He beat on the door and yelled,
but the man wouldn't answer. Finally, the farmer barged in, ran
over to where his hired hand was sleeping soundly. He shook the
man and yelled at him, but it seemed nothing could wake him up.
Disgusted,
he left the man to his sleep and ran into the barn. What he found
was surprising - all the animals were quietly chomping on their
hay or sleeping. Windows had been boarded up in defense of the storm
now raging around him. He looked around and noticed other cares
that had been taken to protect his animals and his barn.
As
the farmer stood in the middle of his barn, looking with wonder
at all the careful precautions that had been made, he remembered
the hired man's words... "I sleep well". Now he understood.
The man slept well because he took care to insure all was protected
from harm before he went to bed.
When
life brings you storms, how well do you sleep?
The
power of a threatened power outage motivated me to get prepared
in case the real thing occurs. Now I sleep better at night when
the wind blows hard.
Love,
Kathy
ps.
Mercury is turning retrograde again on December 10. What might you
do to prepare for communication breakdowns so you can sleep more
soundly?
pps.
We're set for a power outage now. We already had a portable generator,
so we bought a portable electric heater and now have emergency heat.
Whew.

These
fuzzy, cuddly critters make great gifts for the children on your
Christmas list. Kids of all ages learn about the animal through
colorful fact sheets and fun wildlife activities book. And when
you "adopt" a toy animal, the proceeds go to help the
preservation of the real animal. Did you know that the nest
of the Bald Eagle can weigh up to a ton?
This
is a fun way to help those beings who share the Earth with us, but
who have no voice and no vote. I just "adopted" a Bald
Eagle and set it on top of my highest bookcase, where it looks over
the other animals I've adopted - a polar bear, a snow owl, and two
wolves.

Essential
Oil of the Month
Ravensara
This
is the most powerful oil I've found for use against any herpes
type virus - cold sores, shingles, etc.
Whenever
I feel that tingly sensation that means a cold sore is starting,
I put a drop of Ravensara on location and almost always the cold
sore doesn't develop. If I catch it too late, I still apply Ravensara
oil and the cold sore usually disappears within a day or two.
This
week, my husband said his back hurt and would I put some oil on
it. When he took his shirt off I saw a large red spot on his back.
I touched it and he jumped, loudly informing me that yes, that was
the place that hurt. We muscle tested and he was positive for shingles.
Immediately I placed a couple of drops of Ravensara on the spot,
then a couple drops of Meleleuca Alternifolia (tea tree oil). We
repeated this two more times that day and the next morning he said
his back was much better. I thought we should apply the oils again,
and when he took his shirt off the red spot was gone. It was still
a bit tender to the touch, so I applied Ravensara again. The next
day it was completely healed.
It's
also antimicrobial, antiviral, antibacterial, and antitumoral. It's
effective when used for throat and lung infections, pneumonia, and
hepatitis. Plus it supports the respiritory system.
Additional
suggestions of how to use it:
- Apply
on location
- Directly
inhale the aroma from the bottle for fragrant influence
- Diffuse
(always use a cold or misting diffuser)
- Use
as a hot compress
Young
Living oil is steam distilled from the leaves and stems of 100%

no chemicals used in the processing of the plants. Nor are there
chemicals or other ingredients added to dilute or damage the natural
