Giving Forward Every time I hear the phrase "giving back" my mind goes down a convoluted path of thinking that only someone born under Mercury Retrograde (like myself) could transit without getting motion sickness. It goes something like this:
It's enough to give a person a mental whip lash. Being such a literal person, that phrase has caused me more than once to commit a social foo pax (a combination of fubar and faux pax) by asking, "Why did they take it if they just had to give back?" Giving back seems to be all about paying something back. There's an essence of obligation or guilt associated with the saying "giving back". It has the sense of the responsibility to give something back just because you once received something. So, I suggest a new concept - give forward. Giving forward is the simple act of giving. Give just because you want to. Not because you feel you should or you have to or because once upon a time you once were given something. Here's a wonderful opportunity for you to really give forward - www.kiva.org. Kiva lets you lend money to a specific person in a devloping country to help lift them out of poverty. Because it's a loan your money is repaid. When your money is paid back you have the option to walk away with it, knowing you've given someone an incredible opportunity to improve their lot in life. This year ensure that the gifts to the ones you love that will long be enjoyed. Instead of giving stuff that may or may not be appreciated, or even used, give them something that they'll remember long after they've forgotten about the ties, video games, fruit cakes, and other stuff they get.
