Finding Balance
Life
coaches talk a lot about finding balance in your life. It's one
of the main goals that many coaching clients have when they seek
a coach to help them create a better life for themselves.
There
are lots of coaching tools at hand to share with clients as they
work toward creating a balanced life.
There's
the "Wheel of Life", which is a circle divided into 12
sections. Each section represents a segment of life, such as work,
friends, family, recreation, and so on. The client rates their level
of satisfaction in each area of their life and when they've completed
their Wheel of Life, have a visual tool to help them see where their
life is out of balance.
Another
tool is the Continuum - a visual tool that helps the client find
balance between two opposing states of being, such as adventure
vs. safety.
And
there are all kinds of tools to aid the client in prioritizing and
organizing their time so they can be more balanced each and every
day.
As
I was musing about all this balance that people are trying to find
in their lives, I wondered if maybe it wasn't better to be off balance.
If everything is in perfect balance it becomes more difficult to
move forward. For example, the simple act of walking forward requires
that you shift your body off balance with each step.
To
demonstrate, try this: stand as perfectly balanced as you can, putting
equal weight on both feet. Now, without losing that perfect balance
of equal weight, step forward. Impossible, isn't it? You need to
shift more weight onto one foot by creating imbalance, so you can
lift the other off the ground and take the step.
So
it is with your life. Being off balance in your life takes you out
of your comfort zone, which is the zone of no-growth. As long as
you're standing perfectly balanced in comfort, you're going to have
a difficult time moving forward.
Where
