One Minute REtreats REvisited

Whew! We made it through another Mercury retrograde. I don't know about you, but after all the communications breakdowns I experienced during the last three weeks, I'm ready for some relaxation and a retreat.

However, it's not always convenient to escape to a spa for a couple of weeks or lie on a tropical beach somewhere for a few days. So, here are some more One Minute Retreats that can make your time in the real world much more relaxing.

  • Take a belly breath. Breath through your nose (your nose is for breathing, your mouth for eating and talking). Bring the air down to the base of your abdomen, slowly filling your lungs from the bottom upward. When your lungs are as full as they can get, hold for a second, then release your breath gently, emptying your lungs from the top down. Repeat three times. Breathing in this manner changes the chemistry and metabolic processes in your body, reducing Cortisol (the aging hormone) and increasing DHEA (the anti-aging hormone).
  • Explore a strawberry. Select one strawberry and just hold it for a moment. Close your eyes and gently explore the texture of it with your fingertips. Touch it with your tounge and feel the skin, the dimples, the seeds. Smell it - take in it's delicious aroma deeply, bringing the strawberry-laden air deep into your lungs, suffusing your sense of smell with the essence of strawberry. When you're ready, take one bite and just hold the bit of berry in your mouth for a moment, feeling the texture of it and allowing the juice to flow around. Then slowly begin to chew, noticing the difference in texture between the meat and the seeds, and being very aware of the flavor as it fills your mouth. (This is best when used with organic strawberries; they have more aroma and flavor.)
  • Eye Yoga. Your eye muscles can use a retreat, too. Doing close-up work, as most of us do, doesn't allow the eye muscles to stretch and can contribute to tension headaches and blurry vision. First, focus on something very close, then focus intently on the farthest thing you can see. As you shift your focus, feel your eye muscles. Then shift your focus back to the close thing, noticing again how your eye muscels feel when you do this. Repeat this several times using different speeds and noticing each time how it feels. Cover one eye and shift focus with first one eye, then the other. Notice how it feels. When you're done, blink quickly several times to moisten the surface of your eyes.
