Enabling or Empowering: What's the Difference? Empowerment is a term that's often used to describe one of the most gratifying and beneficial results for the client during coaching. The basis of empowerment is the continual, conscious awareness that no matter what the situation the client is facing, there is always an array of choices from which they can choose. Simply being at choice is empowering. Enablement is opposite of empowerment. Enabling another person takes their options of choice away from them. During an act of enablement, the enabler is choosing what they believe is best for another person. Depriving another person of their right to have their own power of choice not only is disempowering, it instantly transforms that person into a victim. Additionally, during this process, the enabler gives much of their energy to the now-victim. In any connection between people, there's a pipeline of energy that's created. In a healthy relationship, the energy flows back and forth evenly. However, between the victim and their enabler, the energy flows effusively one way only - from the source (the enabler) to the victim. If you've ever tried to help a friend and have found that your energy is being drained while they continue blithely on in the same pattern, you've been enabling them. An enabling example: a man gives money to his friend, who chronically has difficulty paying her bills. She takes his money and pays her current bills, but has learned nothing about the choices she made to get herself in her financial pickle in the first place. By giving her the money, he has enabled her to continue in her dysfunctional financial pattern. He becomes frustrated and angry as he watches her continue in this path, and yet he continues to give his energy away to her, both emotionally and physically (remember, money represents energy) thinking that he's actually helping her. An empowering example: same situation as above, but instead of giving his friend the money, he discusses with her some possible options, helping her to see how the choices she's making are embedding her in a finanacial bog. He offers her resources, such as financial advisors, counselors, and professional life coaches. He offers her his support in learning new ways to work with her money. Then, he allows her to make her own choices, detaching from the result... and from the energy drain. Yes, we are all here to help one another, to hold out our hands to those who need a bit of a bolster. The trick is to help them up and not to get pulled down into their quagmire. Enabling pulls the enabler down into OP (Other People's) stuff. Empowerment helps everyone move up. And maybe the best part is that, in the process of empowering others, you get to experience the splendid joy of knowing that you've truly helped another to better their life. Each empowering experience offers wonderful learning that they can carry forward with them to enrich their lives. Love, p.s.
