Reside in Chaos
Hey,
life happens. Stuff breaks down and quits working. People uncooperatively
move out of or into your life when you aren't prepared for it...
or for them. Illness and accidents happen. On top of all this, Mother
Earth can be quite unpredictable, throwing temper tantrums in the
form of earthquakes, volcano eruptions, and various kinds of storms.
Life
is not a flat line. It goes up and down like the stock market, and
there's not a whole lot you can do about it. You can't stop your
car from breaking down or your boss from firing you. And just try
to control a volcano! Hah!
If
you're looking for a nice, smooth ride this lifetime, you're on
the wrong planet. It's
simply not possible for you to control what's happening in the world
outside of you.
What
you can control is what's going on inside of you. Your inner
world. In fact, it's the only thing you do have control over
100% of the time.
When
life is chaotic and you feel like you've totally lost control, congratulations!
You've just achieved a state of mind that most people are still
struggling with - acceptance. This is where peace begins.
After
the stage of acceptance comes the realization that you do, after
all, have control. Yes. You have control over what you choose to
think about it all and how you choose to feel about it.
"What's
so important about that?", you say with a slight sneer of dismay.
Well, two words: Nelson Mandala. One more word: Ghandi. And may
just a few more: The Dalai Lama.
How
would the stories of these modern day heroes have been changed if
they had chosen to think differently about their situations?
-
Imagine Nelson Mandala becoming consumed with anger and hatred
as he sat in prison all those years. Would he have been able to
share with us his profound wisdom that has affected so many of
us regarding our inner strength and purpose?
- If
Ghandi had chosen to become bitter about his plight would he have
been able to teach us another way of being in the face of adversity
- peaceful resistance?
- The
Dalai Lama could easily have become angry and militant, in which
case the world would never have known the magical and powerful
messages of peaceful wisdom he shares with us today.
I
am not privy to the thought processes that allowed these great people
to choose the perspectives they did. But I wonder if just perhaps
it was this:
What
is the highest and best opportunity in this for all concerned?
One
of my clients lives in Florida and had the experience of going through
four hurricanes in a row. During one of our coaching calls he said
that he had gotten a little down at one point when he was up in
a tree with a hand saw, cutting down a limb that had been partially
broken off and was potentially dangerous. He said that as he was
sawing away, he was getting angry and frustrated because this was
taking him away from doing his real work - the work that
actually made him money. He was getting more and more frustrated
and angry as he continued sawing.
Suddenly
he remembered one of our coaching sessions during which we worked
on looking at a situation from different perspectives to find the
opportunities in it. "What is the opportunity in this?" he asked
himself doubtfully. Immediately the answer came to him. His dream
is to live in a cabin in the woods in the Adirondack Mountains.
He realized that what he was doing was a skill that he would no
doubt need when he is living out in the woods. Instantly his anger
and frustration dissipated and he became newly energized as he honed
this new skill.
The
next time you're facing a difficult situation that appears to be
out of your control, I invite you to ask yourself, "What is the
opportunity in this?"
You
may be amazed at the results.
Love,
Kathy
