Ready, Willing, and Able

When I was in real estate (wasn't everyone at some time or another?) we used the phrase "ready, willing, and able" to describe our ideal client. If the potential client exhibited all three of these qualities or states of being, we "lived in their back pocket" because these people were moving into action NOW! If one or more of these qualities was missing, we adjusted our contact with them accordingly.

Recently, as I was sorting through some papers and ran across something that Thomas Leonard had written, this phrase came back to me. He used these three qualities, along with several others, in one of his brilliant messages to coaches. It sparked me to think about how these three states of being as they relate to successful, effective, and productive change.

Everyone wants their life to become better in some way. They either want more (a bigger house, a new car, more money, more clients, etc.) or they want less (less stress, shorter work hours, fewer bills, etc.).

The question is, are they ready, willing, and able to accept the changes they want? Are you?

Here's an example. Say you've been wishing you could win the $10 million lottery.

  • Are you ready for that quantity of money to come into your life? What would you do with it? If all you can think of are the many ways in which you'd spend it, you won't have it for long. A state of readiness in this example might include researching ways to invest the money so that you can continue to enjoy it for your entire life.
  • Are you willing to accept the changes and contend with the impact that a sudden and huge amount of money would have on you and your life? If you find yourself wanting to step backward, even just the tiniest bit, when you think of suddenly realizing your dream of great wealth, then you aren't completely willing to own it.
  • Are you able - physically and logistically - to accept that huge sum of money? Do you have a plan for distribution of the funds that includes investing and saving... and a portion for fun, of course! Have you researched methods for keeping at bay all the people who will want to help you spend your money? Do you have structures and procedures in place now should you receive this amount of money today?

What is the change you desire in your life? Are you ready, willing, and able for it to come to you? If not, what might you do to prepare yourself for it?
