Betty Crockers I don't know how to break this to you gently, so I'll just be bold and tell you outright. There's no Betty Crocker. Now, some of you may already have discovered this horrific fact. For those of you whose Betty Crocker cookbooks are sacred texts, I'm sorry I had to tell you like this. I offer the story of how I found out about the Betty Crocker Lie in the hope that it brings you solace. Years ago I was working as a bookkeeper at a furniture store. At the time, Lane (that most venerable manufacturer of cedar chests) had a begun promotion in which Cynthia Lane, the daughter of Mr. Lane, was telling him how young people wanted cedar chests in more modern styles. The sales rep for Lane came into the store during this promo and I was telling him how I thought it was so wonderful that Mr. Lane's daughter was taking such an interest in her father's business and how great that Mr. Lane was listening to her and what a marvelous relationship they seemed to have.... and on and on. Suddenly I realized that the sales rep's mouth was hanging open and he had an incredulous look on his face. "There's no Cynthia Lane", he blurted out. "That's just a model. So's Mr. Lane. They're both just models. This is just a promotion dreamed up by our ad department." I was stunned. Now it was my turn to look incredulous. "B-b-but, here's her picture. See?" I stuttered as I handed him one of the brochures with "Cynthia Lane" and her "father". He just shook his head slowly as he began chuckling. "You probably think Betty Crocker's a real person, too." "Omigod. Now he's telling me that there's no Betty Crocker! Please, please say it isn't true!" my mind screamed. Well, as it turned out it was true. It took quite some time for me to be able to live with that truth. Since then I've learned that I had other "Betty Crockers", as I came to call them. Beliefs that, on the surface, appeared to be true but after a bit of digging under the surface I discovered were false. Some of these appeared as beliefs I held about my lack of ability, low self esteem, and others that all proved to be false. What Betty Crockers exist for you?
