Painting the Pipes

Some time back I was at a trendy restaurant in downtown Seattle, enjoying the ultra-modern interior design. As I was gazing around I happened to look up and noticed that all the pipes for air conditioning, plumbing, electrical, and who-knows-what-else were painted in bright, cheery colors. I laughed in delight.

What was so unusually delightful about these pipes?

Next time you're in a restaurant, look up and you'll probably figure it out quickly.

You see, most commercial establishments with high ceilings are chock full of criss-crossing pipes, trusses, and other such structural componenets. They try to hide these functional but ugly structures by painting everything overhead black or some other dark, neutral color. The hope is that this technique will in effect hide them, or at the very least, not attract your attention to all the ugly plumbing and framing above you.

The restaurant with the colorful overhead pipes boldly drew attention to that which others were hiding and made it into an integral part of their beautiful decor. They transformed something that typically was considered ugly into something delightful and fun. They turned a liability into an asset.

What aspect about yourself - physical, mental, emotional - do you consider to be your overhead pipes? Brought to the forefront, how might it become an asset that enhances your already beautiful person?

Paint your pipes!

Love,
Kathy

Essential Oil of the Month

Lavender

During the summer, Lavender is an indispensable oil to have on hand. Because it's the most versatile of all essential oils, no home should be without it.

Lavender is especially effective in reducing pain and irritation due to burns on the skin (think sunburn, fireworks accidents, and burns from cooking over a camp fire).

When my husband returned from his first-ever visit to a dermatologist, he had painful, red spots all over his face and hands where the doctor had burned off pre-cancerous skin. I grabbed the Lavender and told him to apply it to each burned spot. Within minutes the pain was gone... and so was the redness.

NOTE: Do not apply Lavandin to the skin for relief from burns. One of the constituents in Lavandin is camphor, which increases the irritation and pain caused by burns and insect bites. Lavender (Lavandula angustifolia) is the correct oil to use for the purpose of soothing skin irritations.

The medicinal properties of lavender are antiseptic, antifungal, analgesic, relaxant, anti-inflammatory, and anticonvulsant. It also reduces blood fat/cholesterol.

  • Therapeutic-grade lavender is highly regarded for skin health and beauty.
  • It may be used to soothe and cleanse common cuts, bruises, and skin irritations.
  • It has balancing properties that can also boost stamina and energy.
  • Combats excess sebum (oils) on skin.
  • It is a great aid for relaxing and winding down before bedtime.
  • Lavender is an adaptogen, and therefore can assist the body when adapting to stress or imbalances.
  • Lavendar improves concentration and mental acuity.
  • Lavender may also be used to enhance the flavor of foods. Try a drop or two in lemonade or iced tea.

Suggestions of how to use it:

  • Diffuse it in your home or office.
  • Put 2-3 drops to your bath water.
  • Apply it to back of neck, throat, temples, and under nose.
  • Apply directly to insect bites.
  • Use full strength on sunburn or other burnt skin.
  • Put 4-8 drops on a cotton ball and locate on heating vents.

Caution: True lavendar is often extended with hybrid lavender or synthetic linalol and linalyl acetate. Young Living Essential Oils are 100% pure, therapeutic grade, organic essential oils. They have nothing added to them that dilutes their potency or their purity. They cost a bit more and they're worth it. They're not only more effective, they last longer because you don't need to use but a drop or two.
