Mercury Retrograde

It's Mercury Retrograde time again. For those of you who aren't familiar with impact of this astrological event, it's just this: it screws up communication.

Mercury is the planet of communication, and three times a year for a period of three weeks each time, it appears to be moving backward. The result is that communications, in all forms, can fall apart. You computer may start crashing, your cell phone quit working, and people may seem to be talking to you in unknown languages.

We're into this current retrograde phase a few days now, and so far I've experienced two really great examples of Mercury Retrograde:

• Day 1 of Mercury Retrograde: Comcast, in the process of installing their cable underground from the monument to my house, cut cleanly through both my phone lines.
• Day 2 of Mercury Retrograde: The repairman sent by Sears to fix my brand new refrigerator could barely speak English, resulting in miscommunication about the problem, incorrect parts ordered, and a wholly unsatisfying solution.

While many people wail and moan and vow to live in the safety of their bed until Mercury once again goes direct, or moves forward again, these periods actually offer you opportunities to discover where your communications are weak, or aren't working at all, and to correct them.

Communication between people during this time is even more challenging than usual. Yet each challenge offers the opportunity to reflect on how to improve the process in order to obtain satisfactory results from the communication. Here are four tips on bettering your communications during this retrograde period... and at any time.

• Get clear about your intent, your purpose, and what your desired outcome for the conversation is before you connect with the other person. By doing so, you reduce the chances of the communication going nowhere... or worse, going into treacherous territory.
• Know what you want from the other person during the conversation and share it with them at the beginning of your communication with them. Do you want emotional support, brainstorming, friendly chit-chat, advice, or help with problem solving? It can be quite frustrating and pointless to want one thing, say a little sympathy from a good friend about your nasty boss, and to receive another, such as their advice on how to find a new job.
• Ask for their permission to have this communication. Find out if they have the time and are available mentally and emotionally. Simply ask if they have a few minutes to help you with something. The other person may be pre-occupied with their own problems, might have just had an upsetting experience, or may not have the time to devote to your communication. If so, their participation will be most reluctant and the results of your communication will be less than optimum.
• Thank them for their time and whatever else you found of value during the communication. You'll find that this simple practice of gratitude will encourage them to be more willing to communicate with you in the future.
