How to Be a Hero

Last weekend my husband and I went to one of our favorite state parks - Fort Flagler - in an effort to escape the extremely hot weather we've been experiencing up here in Washington state. The park is beautiful beyond words. It's across the bay from Port Townsend and from the old parade grounds, which is now a flat grassy spot just perfect for kite flying, the view so awesome it'll bring you to your knees. Mount Rainier, the grandeur of the Olympic Mountains, Port Townsend, the Straits of Juan de Fuca, the shipping lanes and ferries, and Mount Baker - all in one 360 degree panorama of almost unbelievable beauty.

As I was trying rather unsuccessfully to fly my kite in impotent puffs of wind I heard a voice behind me say, "Just learning?"

I laughed and turned to the man who was sitting on top of a picnic table watching me. "No, I'm probably at an intermediate level as a stunt kite flyer, but there's just not enough wind."

We struck up a conversation and suddenly a bottle rocket went off. A group of young adults at the other end of the parade grounds was shooting fireworks, probably left over from their Fourth of July celebration. Besides the fact that the grass was brown and dry as paper, which made for a dangerous fire hazard, there were children playing very near.

The man and I discussed how dangerous this was and he offered to talk to the camp host. I thanked him, and he walked off to find the host.

Later I saw the host in his little electric cart looking for the people with the fireworks. He found them, talked to them, and then drove over to me. He said that he'd warned them about the danger of using the fireworks, the illegality of it, and the hefty financial and jail time penalties of using fireworks in a state park. He said they chose to put their fireworks away. I thanked him for talking to them.

Soon, the man I'd been talking to earlier and his wife strolled over and I told them what the park host had told me.

"Oh, he embarrasses me like this all the time," the man's wife said.

I was stunned. "Why would you be embarrassed?" I asked her. "What your husband did took a lot of courage. Being a whistle-blower is an act of courage."

"But he does this kind of thing all the time," she said. "Sometimes I just want to walk away and pretend that I don't know him."

"Listen. It takes a lot of courage to be the one who speaks up when other people are wrongdoing. Look at all the people here on the beach. Of all of them, your husband is the only one who had the courage to do something about those irresponsible kids and their fireworks. He may have saved one of those children from being injured. Instead of being ashamed of him you should be proud of him."

She looked up at him thoughtfully for a moment. Then she leaned over and kissed him. "I am proud of you," she said softly to him.

More heroes
One of the clerks at the post office told me recently that one of her neighbors calls her The Witch of the Neighborhood, because she's always telling him to turn his excruciatingly loud music down. All of her other neighbors call her a hero, because she has the courage to do what they won't.

A friend of mine told the local fire department about a neighbor who was illegally burning scrap plywood at the house he was building. The smoke from processed wood is very polluting and highly toxic. The fire department rushed a fire truck to the scene, hosed down the fire and put it out. The firebug got a ticket and stopped his illegal and harmful practice. The other neighbors, who had been suffering from this toxic smoke as it filled their homes, thanked her. She had the courage to speak up and stop wrongdoing.

How to be a hero
When you see someone doing something wrong, speak up. Tell the appropriate authorities.
Even if no one kisses you and tells you they're proud of you or calls you a hero, in your heart you'll feel like a hero, knowing that you've been courageous enough to right a wrong.

Love,
Kathy

An Inner Journey on Television!!

Yes, it's true!! An Inner Journey is coming to a television set near you (if you live in the Port Townsend area, that is).

Beginning next month, I'll be producing, directing, and starring in "An Inner Journey, the Television Series" on PTTV! This is a dream come true for me and in case you can't tell, I'm mega excited about it.

Once a month for twelve months I'll be taping a show based on a chapter in the book. The show will be aired once a week at different times in order to "saturate the audience" as the station manager told me. I think that's TV lingo for "giving as many people as possible an opportunity to view it."

Now, here's the best part: each show will be available on CD or as a video tape, so you don't even have to live in Port Townsend to see the shows. And it gets even better! 20% of the proceeds go to benefit this public television station.

More later, so stay tuned!

An Inner Journey Workshop and
Teleworkshop!

Want to experience your inner journey with others who are travelling a similar path?

Beginning in January, you have two opportunities to enhance your experience with An Inner Journey as you join others who are during An Inner Journey Workshops. Enjoy the support and greater inspiration as you connect with others who are on the same path as you.

Both workshops are facilitated by me and are based on my book, An Inner Journey: Living Your Life Purpose. Actually, my book is based on workshops I taught for a couple of years.

Here's what some of the past participants said about the workshop:

"The value of support, clarity, and empowering language really stood out for me. I gained a huge awareness about myself. It gave me food for thought and an opportunity to move closer to my dreams."
Kimm F., Artist

"Taking this inner journey was like entering a sacred portal to a safe place, where I could go to re-discover my hopes and dreams and memories. I came to see how living from my core values creates harmony in my life, and more importantly, how NOT living from my core values creates discord."
Joyce G., Former Director of Development, Direct Relief International

"The tools from my childhood show me what my passions are now. It has already made a difference in my life." Penny V., Business Owner

"A journey of a thousand miles begins with a single step."
