Crossword Puzzles One of my favorite times of the week is Sunday morning when I get to wallow in the Sunday paper. I always save the best part til last - the crossword puzzles. Recently I read that one way to stave off Alzheimer's and other types of brain deterioration is to exercise the brain. One of the recommended methods for doing this was crossword puzzles. This gives me a legitimate reason to lolligag on the sofa all morning because, while it may look like I'm doing nothing, I'm actually working very hard at exercising my brain. Often as I'm working on a puzzle I'll find myself going over and over the same clues, following the same mind paths. It amazes me how quickly the mind can create ruts. When I find myself following the same route over and over in the puzzle, I put it down for a while and do something to jar my mind out of its rut. It doesn't take much. Something as simple as getting another cup of coffee, reading an article I skimmed over earlier, or playing with one of my cats is enough to stop my mind from digging the rut deeper. When I come back to the puzzle, inevitably I look at the clues from a different perspective... one which usually leads me to the answer. An example is one clue that had me baffled recently - "driver's aid". My mind went to drivers of cars and searched for answers like "map" or "GPS'. After becoming very frustrated with not being able to identify the word I put the paper down and did something else for a few minutes. When I came back to it and reread the clue, my mind had gotten out of the "car driver" rut and with this new perspective I thought of other kinds of drivers, such as golfers. Sure enough, the answer was "tee." When you're trying to find a solution to a problem and you find yourself stuck in a mental rut, stop what ever you're doing. Go do something else, even if it's only for a few minutes. Then come back to your problem. You'll find you have a new perspective and will see solutions that you didn't even know existed when you were busy going around and around in your mental rut. Love, ps.
