Model VAK If you have difficulty learning and tend to become stressed out in learning situations, the problem most likely isn't you. It's probably the way you're being taught. Most teaching methods are based on mental exercises, yet most people learn through use of their senses. The things you've learned the easiest and have retained the longest were things you learned by using one or more of your senses. For example:
Most of your learning utilizes three main senses: sight, hearing, and touch. Neuro-Linguistic Programming (NLP) has created a model of these three sensory learning methods and has named their model VAK: Visual Visual people learn best by seeing. They're the ones who read the instructions and actually understand them. Auditory people learn most effectively by hearing. You just tell them how something works and they get it. Kinesthetic people learn best by doing. They're the real hands-on types. How does this look in real life? Let's use an example of learning how to assemble some knock-down bookshelves - the type you can buy at Ikea. The Visual person would first use their predominant learning sense and would read the instructions - from beginning to end. Then they would begin to assemble the bookcases, using their Kinesthetic learning sense. The Auditory person might use their predominant learning sense by having the Visual person read the instructions to them. Then they'd engage both their Visual and Kinesthetic learning senses to begin putting the pieces of the bookcases together. The Kinesthetic person would probably toss the instructions aside and immediately begin to assemble the bookcases, learning as they build them. How do you know if you're a Visual, Auditory, or Kinesthetic learner? There's a very simple method you can use to find out. Pay attention to the words and phrases that you habitually use. Your language reflects the way you think. Visual people say things like:

The next time you're in a learning situation and begin to feel stress or frustration with the process, pay attention to how you're being taught.
