Busting Through Burn-out
In
the midst of your busy day, you find yourself staring off in space,
caught in a catatonic trance.
Moving
piles of paper from one side of your desk to the other occupies
a good portion of your work day.
Colds,
flu, headaches, pain from repetitive movements, all are increasing
in frequency.
These
are symptoms of burn-out. There are a lot more symptoms, all of
which are easy to identify. Basically it comes down to this: if
there's anything that causes you to avoid work you once found enjoyable,
you're most likely experiencing burn-out.
Burn-out. It happens to everyone sooner or later.
It
happened to me in the midst of a very successful real estate career.
Suddenly I had all kinds of reasons for not going into the office.
My broker began calling me at home to see if I was okay. When I
finally did manage to force myself to go into the office, I couldn't
pick up the phone to call my clients. I'd sit and stare at it, but
couldn't make my hand move toward it. If I did somehow manage to
life the receiver and begin to dial a number, I'd hang up before
I even finished dialing.
Burn-out
can be an indication that it's time for you to move on with your
work - either make a complete change to another, new type of work
- or modify the work you're currently doing.
Or,
it can be an indication that you just need to take time for yourself.
In my case, the burn-out I experienced was caused by this one thing:
I allowed my job to eat up my life.
In
hindsight, I believe life coaching would have given me the clarity
to see the changes I could make in my life that would allow me to
retain the sense of fun and excitement I once had for real estate.
Unfortunately, this was before the days of life coaching. Well,
now I are one (a life coach) and I'm excited that I get to help
others work through their burn-out.
Here
are a few things you can implement in your life now to help you
relieve any symptoms of burn-out you may be experiencing:
- Take
time for yourself each day, even if it's only fifteen minutes.
Do something you enjoy, something that relaxes and soothes you.
- When
you're not at work, turn off your cell phone, pager, and computer.
Especially turn off your cell phone when you're with your family
or other loved ones in the evening and at mealtimes. You need
to connect with other human beings in a non-work related manner
in order to keep your sanity.
- Designate
one day a week as your day off and make it sacred. Do not
work at your job during this day, no matter how whiney your clients
or bosses become. In the end, they'll respect you more for honoring
yourself.
- Once
a month, go on a mini-vacation. It doesn't need to be far,
far away or expensive. Explore your area as if you were a tourist
and you'll find all kinds of new experiences that refresh and
renew. Festivals, parks, museums, and more await your discovery.
Don't wait until your annual vacation. Once a year vacations from
work aren't enough to sustain you the entire year.
The
bottom line for busting burn-out is to take time for yourself on
a regular basis. You need it, you deserve it, and you're worth it.
Love,
Kathy

pps.
If you've been thinking about coaching with me but have been procrastinating,
here's a good reason to start now: as of October 1, my coaching
fees for new clients are increasing. Why? Because I'm worth it,
and so are you.

The
Life Betterment Club for Women
Dear
Women,
Are
you feeling like your life is on hold, and it has been for waaaaaay
to long now?
Or
maybe you're getting the sense that there's more to life and you'd
like to experience some of it.
You're
not alone. Untold thousands of other women are feeling like you.
They, too, are feeling the dissatisfaction of being stuck in an
ill-fitting career, a dead-end job, or a relationship that no longer
suits them.
"When
mama ain't happy, ain't nobody happy."
That
old comic saying holds a lot of truth. Women are nurturers and caretakers.
The health of their family - physical as well as emotional - most
often depends upon them. In my experience over the years as a life
purpose coach and spiritual teacher, I've witnessed many situations
with women who were unhappy in one or more aspects of their life.
Their unhappiness spread out like ripples in a pond and affected
everyone around them.
We're
all together in wanting to make the world - our world - a better
place. It starts with you taking steps to improve your life. Each
time you do so, you improve the lives of all the people you connect
with, and they improve the lives of everyone they connect with,
and so on.
The
Life Betterment Club for Women is a group of women who meet once
a week for an hour on the phone. Each meeting is facilitated by
me, Kathy Wilson, Life Purpose Coach, and focuses on a concept or
technique for the betterment of each member's life.
