Outrageous
Women of Consequence
In
my young adulthood, I came to the conclusion that what I really
wanted to be when I grew up was a character. One of those people
who do outrageous acts of nonsensical frivolity. The kind of person
that ordinary people stand by and look at in awe and wonderment,
secretly wishing they could be so bold.
I
think I may be showing signs of becoming a true character - what
I call "an Outrageous Woman of Consequence". Here's a
few symptoms:
- I'm
noted in my very conservative neighborhood for being the woman
who makes a Halloween Wonderland out of her yard every October.
- People's
eyes often grow large and they drop their jaws at some of the
bold, outrageous statements I make.
- I
often wear my pink sequined tiara, which does much to brighten
my spirits in the drab, gloomy winter. I wear it not just around
the house, but while shopping and running errands.
- In
this resort/retirement development where I live, normal people
mostly go on walks around the neighborhood for their exercise.
I practice my Tai Chi Spear and Saber forms in the front yard.
In
my life, there have been a few women whom I've had the divine pleasure
of knowing and who are truly Outrageous Women of Consequence. They
live normal lives, but in a rather un-normal manner. One of my favorites
is Betty Lou.
Betty
Lou was the cook at the Chimacum Cafe for years. I got to know her
when I began frequenting the place for lunch and sometimes breakfast
and dinner (although I love eating, I hate cooking). I didn't go
there for great food. Betty wasn't the best of cooks. I went there
to enjoy Betty.
Her
life hadn't been easy. She had been married to an alcoholic, bore
him six kids, and did a dang fine job of raising all of them...
mostly by herself. When I met her, all her kids had been raised
and were on their own. She had left her husband and was on her own
and lovin' it.
Although
the customers could see her cooking at the grill from any spot in
the cafe, she was noted for putting on some piece of weird clothing
- a hot pink feathered boa or a HUGE foam cowboy hat, for instance
- and meandering through the tables chatting with the customers...
often to the detriment of whatever she was cooking at the time.
There
was always a lineup of people waiting to get into the Cafe when
Betty worked. Sometimes she'd stomp out into the middle of the cafe,
look around and yell, "Don't you people have homes to go to?"
Then she'd stomp back to her grill. This was usually on the days
when she wore her T-shirt that said "Send more tourists. The
last ones were delicious." The tourists would be shocked. The
regulars would laugh and slap their knees.
One
day as I was sitting at the counter quietly eating whatever glop
she'd cooked that day for lunch, she stuck her elbows on the counter
in front of me and propped her head on her hands. Thankfully, she'd
wiped most of the cooking grease off her hands when she came around
the end of the prep station.
Looking
at me wistfully, she breathed out a heavy sigh. "You know what this
world needs?" Another deep sigh.
I
was almost afraid to ask, but my curiosity overcame my caution.
"What, Betty Lou?"
"A
pink chiffon prom formal," she said smacking the countertop for
emphasis with the flat of her hand. Then, before I could wrap my
brain around this newest pearl of wisdom from her and formulate
a reply, she swiveled away and flounced, as only someone with a
sausage-shaped body could, back to her grill to produce yet another
almost inedible meal for some unsuspecting tourist.
When
I got home from work, the first thing I did was rummage through
my closet to find last year's Halloween costume... a chiffon prom
formal. It wasn't pink. It was lipstick red. The skirt hit me above
the knees, so I figured it would be about floor length on Betty.
It had a properly flouncy skirt with many layers of chiffon and
two long hunks of red chiffon hanging from the center of the bodice
to the hem. I figured it would do the job.
At
lunchtime the next day I presented it to Betty Lou at the cafe.
Before I could blink, she grabbed the dress, pulled it on over her
greasy, food-stained apron, and performed Loretta Young twirls throughout
the entire cafe.
That's
what brought so many people to the cafe. That's what kept a perpetual
line of people out the door and around the corner of the building.
They were all waiting to have the Betty Lou experience, truly an
Outrageous Woman of Consequence.
Love,
Kathy

Book
o' the Month
Books
have always been an important part of my life. One of my most favorite
jobs was working at a bookstore. I'd gaze around the store in amazement
at all of the wondrous knowledge that was available to me in all
the thousands of books that were gathered together in this one place.
It was like having all of the wisest people in all the world
in all of history right in front of me, ready to share the
best and juiciest parts of their wisdom with me. Picking up a book
and reading it was like walking up to them and saying, "tell
me the best of all that you know". And so they did... each
time I would open their books and read their words.
Because
I love books soooooo much, I want to share with you those that especially
excite me.
This
month's book selection isn't
just one book. It's a whole bunch of them. In fact, it's the entire
collection of Sark books. They're all so fantabulous I couldn't
pick just one!
I
was introduced to Sark during my job at the bookstore. Who could
resist a book that has a cover like this one?!?
Opening
the book and delving into the content was even more fun than enjoying
the bright, happy cover design. Sark offers such wisdom as:
- Spiritual
travel has many routes. Travel in the interior is a profound experience.
- Notice
and celebrate daily miracles. Miracles multiply with sharing.
- Feelings
between people can act as bridges. All of your feelings are acceptable.
- Fears
lie. Your fears are NOT larger than you are.
- Believe
in everything until you find out otherwise. (And maybe even after
that)
Sark,
AKA Susan Ariel Rainbow Kennedy, is a most remarkable and delightful
woman who overcame some gigantic challenges in her life. I won't
spoil it by telling you about them. I'll let her tell you in her
books. Lucky for us, she has shared her magical self with us in
her books and artwork.
Here
are some of my favorites in my Sark collection:
- Glad
No Matter What
- Eat
Mangoes Naked:
Finding Pleasure Everywhere and Dancing With the Pits
- Inspiration
Sandwich: Daily Morsels for Your Creative Soul
- Succulent
Wild Woman: Dancing With Your Wonder-full Self
- Transformation
Soup:
Healing for the Splendidly Imperfect
- The
Bodacious Book of Succulence:
Daring to Live Your Succulent Wild Life
- Prosperity
Pie: How to Relax and Money and Everything Else
But
wait! There's more! You can find all
of Sark's books on Amazon.com.
Essential
Oil of the Month
Joy
The
Essential Oils Desk Reference, my main source of info about
Young Living Essential Oils, says this about Joy:
It
produces a magnetic energy to bring joy to the heart, mind, and
soul. It inspires romance and helps overcome deep-seated grief
and depression.
Here's
what I say about it:
This
oil smells sooooo good and makes you feel soooo great you'll want
to put it all over yourself every day!! However, it's very potent
and one drop goes a long way and lasts a long time, so be a bit
prudent with your use of it. The bottle of oil lasts a long time
- even though you'll want to use it everywhere.
This
oil is really yummy! It only takes a few seconds after I apply a
drop of it to the base of my throat or over my heart before I'm
feeling happier and have a cheerier outlook. (Read on to learn about
how the aroma of the oils affects your emotions.)
Suggestions
of how to use it:
- Apply
a drop over heart, on wrists, Thymus, and at base of throat
- Add
2 - 4 drops to hot bathwater. (Decadent!)
- Directly
inhale
- Diffuse
- Put
a few drops on a cotton ball and place over heating vents
- Add
a few drops to vegetable oil and use for a full body massage (ohhh
yeah!)
- Sprinkle
a couple of drops in front of the heat vents on the carpet of
your car. (It'll make your commute a whole lot better!)
Oils
included in this blend:
- Rose
has the highest frequency of all essential oils. It creates a
magnetic energy that attracts pure love and brings joy to the
heart.
- Bergamot
balances hormones and calms emotions.
- Mandarin
has hypnotic properties.
- Ylang
Ylang increases relaxation.
- Lemon
stimulates and invigorates.
- Geranium
helps release negative memories so that joy can be attained.
- Jasmine
revitalizes spirits and brings feelings of love and joy.
- Palmarosa
is stimulating and revitalizing, bringing about a feeling of security.
- Roman
Chamomile combats
restlessness and tension.
- Rosewood
is high in linalool, which has a relaxing, empowering effect.
To
obtain the fullest aromatic benefits of this oil, after
applying it rub the palms of your hands together briskly to warm
the oil on them. Then cup them and place them over your nose. Take
three deep breaths This brings the minute oil particles deep into
your nasal passages, where their energy imprint is picked up by
the Olfactory nerve and taken to the Amygdala gland - the control
center of all your emotions and the release of all hormones.
Young
Living essential oils are steam distilled from the leaves and stems
of 100% organic plants. Unlike other brands of essential oils, there
are no chemicals used in the processing of the plants. Nor are there
chemicals or other ingredients added to dilute or damage the natural
healing properties of the oils.
